How to Engage In sickle Cell Works

What is sickle cell works?

These are activities, projects, programs, and interventions directed at sickle cell warriors and the sickle cell community. The goals of sickle cell works are to create awareness about sickle cell disorder among the public, to improve sickle cell knowledge among sickle cell warriors, family members and caregivers, to assist in improving care of sickle cell warriors and to encourage more research into sickle cell disorder.

Who are sickle cell warriors?

People living with or people with sickle cell disorder such as sickle cell anaemia, sickle cell traits, sickle cell disease in combination with thalassemia and other variants of sickle cell disorder.

What is sickle cell community?

This is a community of sickle cell warriors, family members of sickle cell warriors, caregivers, donors, researchers, and support groups for sickle cell warriors. They could be sickle cell clubs, sickle cell association, sickle cell groups, sickle cell foundations, sickle cell organizations, NGO, etc.

Types of sickle cell works:

Sickle cell advocacy, sickle cell awareness campaign/program, sickle cell education, sickle cell counselling, sickle cell care, sickle cell research, sickle cell clinics, sickle cell outreach programs, etc.

Other sickle cell works are donations, sponsoring of sickle cell programs, sickle cell screening, and others.

Now, let’s see a sickle cell community engaged in sickle cell works.

Beulah Sickle Cell Foundation (BSCF) was incorporated in 2016 as an NGO which grew to establish a monthly club where a clinic for sickle cell warriors holds, and the first clinic was on the 9th of July 2019. The vision of Beulah SCF is to reduce and eradicate the scourge of sickle cell disorder in the next generation. Her mission is to maximize the quality of life and improve survival rate of sickle cell warriors in the nearest future.

The monthly gathering has become a meeting point for sickle cell warriors, caregivers, and other stakeholders with the aim to improve quality of lives, create more awareness, support individuals and communities. Over the past 26 months, it has grown to more than 100 members.

Some sickle cell works at the monthly club are:

  1. Distribution of free routine medications to sickle cell warriors and some specialized consultation and treatment when the need arises.
  2. Free routine tests for sickle cell warriors.
  3. Sickle cell education through health talks from various health experts targeted towards sickle cell warriors and caregivers.

  11. Donation of facemask to sickle cell warriors and other sickle cell foundations in Nigeria.
  12. Collaboration with other sickle cell foundations to increase sickle cell awareness.
  13. Sickle cell outreach programs to rural settlements where social media is unreachable to create more awareness.
  14. Sharing our sickle cell experiences with each other to encourage, empower, and celebrate each other.
