Georgia Oboh: Breaking Boundaries on and Off the Greens

Georgia Oboh hails from Manchester, a city in northern England. Her introduction to golf at a young age was greatly influenced by her parents. It all started when her father ( who is also her coach ) , who had been introduced to the game by his Mother – In-Law – Mrs Mary Oboh (contrary to the news making the rounds  ) and, encouraged his wife ( Georgia’s momager) to take up golf as well . Before long, their six-year-old daughter, Georgia, was already grasping her very first golf club and swinging her way to global professional stardom .

GEORGIA OBOH : A BUDDING ROLE MODEL

Georgia Oboh is a highly skilled British-born Nigerian golf professional who competes on the Ladies European Tour and is also a member of the LPGA. In 2021, she entered her third season as a touring golf professional with a clear goal in mind – to ascend to the pinnacle of female professional golf and become the world’s No. 1.

As an active member of various golf associations, including the Professional Golf Association Nigeria (PGAN), Ladies Professional Golf Association Nigeria (LPGAN), Sunshine Ladies Tour (SLT), and Ladies European Tour (LET), Georgia, at just 20 years old, has already made significant strides in her career.

Born on February 25, 2001, in Bury, England, Georgia’s roots trace back to Lagos, Nigeria. While pursuing her dreams on the golf course, she is simultaneously pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Her ambition extends beyond personal success; she aims to elevate the sport of golf in Nigeria and across Africa, inspiring the next generation of African golfers.

Georgia’s golf journey began at the tender age of six at Brocket Hall in Hertfordshire, England and she swiftly rose through the ranks, competing on the British Junior Golf Tour throughout England.

Her transition to professional golf took place on November 11, 2018, at the age of 17, marking a significant milestone in her career. With an impressive amateur record and her dedication to the sport, Georgia’s net worth is likely to have soared into the millions.

Georgia’s introduction to golf came from her parents, with her father, Godfrey, taking up the sport as a means to relieve stress from running a store in central London. Her Nigerian nationality adds a unique dimension to her identity.

Within her family, Georgia holds the distinction of being the eldest of three siblings and has earned numerous accolades, including the 2007 British Junior Golf Tour Player of the Year and the Nigerian Sports Commission’s Discovery of the Year in 2018. Her journey in the world of golf is nothing short of remarkable, and her future in the sport shines brightly.

When Nigerian Georgia Oboh began playing golf, she struggled to identify role models in her sport, so she took inspiration from elsewhere – in particular, from tennis greats Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka.“To see someone who looked like me playing at such a top level and is still doing so now was quite inspirational,” she told CNN Sport.“For Naomi Osaka, she’s part of the new generation of tennis stars and top-level athletes. I just really connect with her in the sense that we’re trying to break through in all sports.”
