How Nigerian Designers Missed Out On Tems Red Carpet Fashion At The 2023 Oscars

Nigerian singer-songwriter – Tems was nominated for the 2023 edition of the Oscars in the category of Best Original Song courtesy of a collaboration she had on the song, “Lift Me Up” with popular singer, Rihanna; music producer, Ludwig Göransson; and Black Panther’s director, Ryan Coogler.

The award ceremony is which took place at the Dolby Theatre, Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles, US yesterday ,

The custom white sculptural gown by Ukrainian brand, Lever Couture’s AW22, Leleka Couture collection. Other stars who have worn the brand are Crdi B , Heidi Klum

The outfit was first spotted in August 31st, 2022, when LEVER COUTURE presented its latest Couture collection, titled ‘Leleka’, during 23 S/S Rakuten Fashion Week in Tokyo/Japan

Once again the Nigerian fashion space has missed out on this one or do we say they were collectively shunned by the glam team of Tems ?

Every year , we keep witnessing this recurring decimal of Nigerian artistes flaunt their red carpet moment in foreign labels . From Tiwa Savage to Burna Boy , Davido , Wizkid , Asake and most recently – Tems , the only thing Nigerian we see is the individual and their name .Before we know it , she will clinch a global fashion ad campaign alongside the red carpet paparazzi .

Now is it that our creatives are still not up to par or do we not notice the opportunities we keep missing ? Why are they always shunned ?

While some school of thought say that the artistes are selfish – due to the fact that they style some of these artistes at the start of their carrer and once they “Blow “they shun these designers and cling onto the more globally accepted ones .

What is your take on this ?
