Ss23 “Indigo in the desert” – The vibrant colors of Africa
Inspired by the deserts, the dye pits, and beautiful greenery of Nigeria. This collection is an array of colors, shades, prints and patterns.
The curves represent the undulating terrains of the desert and its different hues of gold inspired me to use wavy lines to create abstract prints and innovative stitches.
The rich greenery of the rain forest in the southern part of Nigeria is displayed in a variety of fabric prints and the color of elegance ‘emerald’.
The embroidery used for decoration is influenced by the culture of northern Nigeria.
However, my greatest motivation stems from the kofar Mata Dye Pits of Kano ( northern Nigeria ) founded in 1498, it is said to be the oldest in Africa and the last of their kind. This transported me back to my earliest memory of adire( tie dye) in the color indigo.
According to the designer ……“I have used a variety of fabric textures, prints and embellishments to create contemporary pieces. Ultimately, with inspiration from the climate, nature, culture and history; not only of my beautiful country Nigeria, but of other the rich attributes we all share as Africans.
