Toolz: I grew up mainly in the UK- Bournemouth and London. I went to boarding school in Bournemouth, and my sister and I were the only black people in the school. I didn’t really notice till I got a bit older and realized that we were being treated differently. My parents were in Nigeria, so when the holidays came about we would stay with our Governess Mrs Lucas. She’s late now unfortunately, but she had a huge impact on me when I was younger.
I wouldn’t say I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth, but I am grateful that I was able to enjoy certain privileges. Having said that I’ve never been scared to work hard. I’ve always wanted to be independent, and this made me start working early. I started working at age 14/15 because I wanted my own money. My first job was washing dishes at an Italian restaurant. It is no surprise i am running businesses as an adult.
Gbenga Ayo-Dada: Tell us , how much has your life changed since your entrance into motherhood?
Toolz: It has changed massively. My life isn’t just my life anymore. Every morning I now plan my day with my little man (and of course big man) in mind. However I can’t stress how blessed I am. My son is definitely one of the best things that has happened to me.
Gbenga Ayo-Dada: Late last year, your husband opened up about how you sacrificed your job and business to ensure the safe arrival of your baby, care to share more details?
Toolz: Everything in Lagos pretty much ground to a halt because I had to put my baby’s health and my health first. So there were a lot of projects I had to turn down and I also had to partially shut down Sablier- my lingerie line. It was tough, but we had our priorities right.
