Its no longer news that the year 2020 was a challenging one and the wort hit were the service providers. As the pandemic is pretty an anti – social one ( social distancing  ). This trickled down to various facets of the industry especially the lifestyle industry. Here are some of he Gains and Pains the industry encountered .

EXPLORING THE DIGITAL SPACE

The lifestyle industry in Nigeria has been able to become more digitally sound, by exploring the digital space engaging in  e-commerce to sell their products. From basic posts to opening and getting involved in virtual market , we saw quite of fashion brands seize the opportunity .

FASHION DESIGNERS EVOLVED TO CREATE MORE CASUAL DESIGNS.

Fashion designers realizing the trends in 2020 fashion styles made huge sales from creating more casual based outfits. he casual lines that seemed to have been left for the boutiques , saw more home grown brands take the fore.   This was one of their major gains after the lockdown due to covid 19.

NIGERIAN FASHION DESIGNERS WERE MOST PATRONIZED FOR  SELLING NOSE MASKS

One of the major highlights of 2020 is when the lockdown was lifted and there was a high demand for nose masks. Nigerian fashion designers stepped up their game by producing and selling nose masks across the country and this was because the orders and air space were in lockdown hence our local brands enjoyed a huge patronage .

COLLABORATONS OF  NIGERIAN CELEBRITIES IN 2020

Asides the celebrities and designers keeping us via Tik Tok videos as well as various challenges , we saw a lot of collaborations at the END SARS protest. The protest had almost all Nigerian celebrities championing one cause, which is for the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) to be ended. This could be categorized as a major gain because some of the demands were met by the government and also, the strength of the lifestyle industry was very instrumental.

ADAPTATION TO OCCUPATIONAL TRANSITIONS

Adaptation to Occupational Transitions Despite the challenges the lifestyle industry faced last year, it led to workers and brands adapting to occupational transitions with considerations for health and safety. Working remotely became the order of the day and more overhead costs were reduced .

GROWTH IN DIGITAL STOREFRONTS/SHOPPING

There has been significant growth in digital storefronts/shopping as most people avoided going to shopping malls, restaurants etc during the pandemic making digital storefronts the next big thing.

ACCEPTANCE OF NEW IDEAS AND INNOVATION

There has been a break in the way in which things were done before as people are now open to new ideas and innovations. It was a case of Get Re – invented or Get left behind .

The likes of  Ibidunni Ighodalo, Dan Foster, Pa Kasumu, Gbenga Ajumoko, Nigerian International model -Kimmie Adams, Gordon of Nodrog , Folake Coker lost her dad , Maureen Onigbanjo lost her son , Berkley Jones Ike, Toyosi Arigbabuwo, Chizoba Boye, Frank Dallas and many others.

THE SHUTDOWN OF CLUBS, BARS AND CINEMAS

One of the major blows that hit the lifestyle industry in 2020 was lockdown of pulic lifestyle centers  . Although cinemas are now open, they were locked down most of the year. Many movies could not be featured in the cinema because of this, hence movie producers lost a lot of money and there was a nose dive in business for those in these sector .

NO RED CARPET & CONCERTS

The Nigerian fashion industry was hardest hit here.  This hit all lifestyle sectors as fashion designers could not make sales on outfits that are specific for these events.

FEW FASHION SHOWS HELD IN 2020

Nothing could be more painful than not being able to showcase and make sales of your products like you used to. The fashion, beauty and lifestyle industry were badly hit by the fact that fashion shows could not hold due to covid 19 restrictions.

AWARD SHOWS BECAME VIRTUAL

The lifestyle industry usually looks forward to award shows, as lifestyle celebrities are always getting set to storm awards ceremonies with creative and beautiful outfits. This couldn’t be done in 2020.

REDUCTION IN PRODUCTION

Most production units were shut down due to shortage of labour

DECLINE IN SALES

Due to the pandemic, companies that produced non-essential products experienced a drastic decline in sales.

LOOTING AND VANDALISM DURING END SARS PROTEST

The looting, vandalism and loss of lives and properties during the End SARS protest affected many.
