On Sunday the 4th of August 2019, I attended the grand finale of “The luxury model search Nigeria”, which took place at Landmark centre Oniru. If I’m being honest there was nothing luxurious about that entire event, asides the venue.
The event was set to start for 7pm, but didn’t start until about 8:45pm. And even at that they were so sluggish. It was almost like we were at a Yoruba owanbe, except the fact that Yoruba parties are always packed. There were several empty seats and tables.
Also there was a woman yelling at the waiters to come and serve her guests, taking them from one table to another. In my mind I was like (we get it, you’re the organizer of the show, just sit down and let the waiters do the job you hired them to do). At one point the commotions made it hard to pay attention to the runway shows. We were served Asun (barbecue goat meat), mock tails, and red wine. Not to be superficial but, FUN FACT: Asun is not a luxury food or snack.
The judges of the show was Tewa Onasanya, of Exquisite Magazine, Abiola Olatunde of Maestro’s media, Ifeanyi Chris Oputa of studio 24, and Mabel Adeteye from TVC.
The 7 finalists were all beautiful girls, they strutted in 3 different designers. J Reason, Sevon Dejana, and House of Jahdara. All beautiful pieces I must add.
The night wasn’t about the designers, but I just have to talk about how amazing HOUSE OF JAHDARA pieces were, I really enjoyed staring at them. The most exciting part was how the designer worked with major trends right now, like neon and tulle and made them into high fashioned pieces.
While the girls were in-between outfits backstage, the MC decided to name the best dressed male and female in the audience. They gave the title to the most basic dressed people in the crowd. I was laughing my lungs out. I’m not trying to be petty, but I attended the event with one of my best friends OPARA BOY and we were the best dressed in the audience, everyone knew that. Infact we felt overdressed because the entire event was underwhelming.
Back to the models. Just one of girls stood out for me, her name is Damilola. She walked so well, she answered all the questions asked of her with so much poise and confidence. Literally everyone was rooting for her because she wasn’t basic like the other girls (no offense). She’s also a familiar face, I think I’ve seen her walk few shows in the past.
But to our biggest surprise, they wanted to give someone else the prize. So apparently the judges also agree with fact that Damilola should be the winner, because she was obviously way better. But the show organizers already have their own winner and told the judges who they wanted the winner to be. But the judges were not having it at all, they created a scene, some even walked out. I think only Abiola stayed back to make sure they crowned the right girl.
I was living for the drama, not gonna lie. They eventually got it together, listened to the judges and gave the prize to Damilola Bolarinde.
Incase you’re wondering what the prize was, it’s one million naira. What a luxury event it was.
