Forget Palm Oil Palava: Will Air Fryers Fry Our Jollof Dreams?

Nigerians and frying go hand-in-hand, like suya and onions. But lately, this newfangled contraption called an air fryer is promising “healthy fried food.” Now, before we trade our trusty frying pans for these fancy gadgets, let’s ask the real question: will air fryers send our beloved jollof, akara, and dodo packing, or are they just another fad hotter than a pepper soup on a Lagos afternoon? Buckle up, folks, because we’re about to deep-dive (pun intended) into the world of air frying.

Air frying offers a healthier alternative, cutting fat and calories while maintaining flavor. Even recipes calling for oil use less than traditional frying methods. However, remember that some fats are beneficial, like those found in olive or avocado oil, supporting heart health. Plus, air frying reduces the formation of acrylamide, a potential carcinogen linked to cancer. Yet, the overall healthiness of air frying depends on what you cook and how you balance your meal. Pair less nutrient-dense items like fries with more nutritious choices and aim for a well-balanced plate: half fruits and veggies, a quarter protein, and a quarter whole grains or starchy veggies with a touch of fat. It’s all about making smart choices to support your health goals.

Remember ,this is what  you want to aim for:

1/2 of your plate fruits and veggies
1/4 of your plate protein
1/4 of your plate whole grain or starchy veggies with a small amount of fat
