How did you start producing music and what prompted you to go into it ?
- SPELLZ – I started by writing poems and from there I started writing music. Before then, I had a bit of music background growing up say 6 /7 years old , I started playing the drums in church . My dad is a multi instrumentalist so I had music all around me -even though he never did anything in music professionally , he had the demos and all that . For me it was when I veered into writing songs as far back as 2007. Back then, I did not have any tools and I needed beats for the songs that I wrote so that was when I started looking for how I could get beats and my friend introduced me to a software and that was how it all started- don’t forget before then I knew only how to play the drums, keyboards etc so that helped also a great deal.
-
So how long did it take you to start your own career as a music producer ?
- Spellz – I think I started in 2006 but it was not until 2009 that I felt I was good enough to strat sending my music out . Beefor then I was doing a lot of crash recordings with my guys in school so I would say it took me 3 years before I went professional .

How did you first connect with your biggest artiste and who is the biggest artsite you have worked with so far ?
- Spellz – I have worked with a lot of big artistes, so I cant tell you who the biggest is or not if you ask who the biggest artistes are in Nigeria- I have worked with all of them -from wizkid , davido , flavour,… tiwa savage , teni…..they are all big and In my own opinion I believe everyone has got their season. These are people that their fan base are wide spread not just in Nigeria . God has blessed me and I have been able to work with everyone of them over the course of my career .
-
So who was the first person you connected with ?
- Spellz- That would be Chudi k, we started out with the hit song “Gaga Crazy“. I then moved on to 9ice, Chudi k’s manager recommended me to him .from there I met 2face , I had always known Banky W before then we had always been cool, and I did some work for him as well . From there it spilled over to Wizkid and then Tiwa – we met through Teebillz . I have known Teebillz for a while and he was her manager at the time and he also wanted to manage me as well . Tiwa and I have been working together ever since .
- Can you describe briefly how you work with theses artistes on a project ?
- Spellz- Well there is no straight cut pattern on how we work . Sometimes it is the beat that comes first . Sometimes I might play a beat and sometimes the artiste has a song . Sometimes the artiste and I come together and write a song then we produce but 70% of the time- I have to come up wit the beat first for instance when we are looking for a party song – I have to come up with something fresh and trendy first .

You seem very passionate about what you do , how much time on the average does it take you to come up with a beat for a song ?
- Spellz – It comes in different ways , at times when the inspiration bar is full, it can take 20mins or 30 mins to produce a beat other times, it is a process . It comes in by bit . Sometimes, when I am making a beat and at that point where I am , I just cant go further , I stop , I leave it – I don’t listen to it ( its not intentional , it’s a process ) then an artiste comes, then I while searching -I stumble on that incomplete beat and they like it and this inspires me to go further on the “incomplete”beat to finish it up . So it’s a process .
-
What would you say stands you out from other music producers ?
- Spellz – Firstly – integrity . That is a very important part of my business . You don’t sell to a client what you can not provide . We provide songwriting services, we provide production , we provide AnR – this is how you arrange your songs , the kind of album you want to make , we also provide beat production , we build studios as well and other things music related . We have never made two of the same beats or that sound alike . each one has its own style and I don’t give different artistes the same beat
-
Do you have an idea of how many beats you have created ?
- Spellz- Well out in use – maybe like 500 since I started but in my closet may be 15,000. in a year – 3000 beats with different genres – rnb , pop music , American trap music , rap music , Afro beat , classic music too – that is another thing that is coming out soon .
-
Do you have any favourite artistes you have worked with ?
- Spellz – I think working with wizkid has been one of my favourite collaborations also Tiwa Savge . Sometimes when we are on a project and I cant go any further , she understands and take a break . We have a good working relationship .Some other artistes will feel that because they are on the clock – you have to keep going . You cant force music.
-
Do you have anyone you would wish to work with ?
- Spellz – I would love to work with Casper the rapper from South Africa , also Vanessa Ndi – I love her music, she is from Tanzania and also Adekunle Gold – he is one of my favourite artistes . I have not worked with him yet and I look forward to doing so . He is a very talented and grounded musician.
-
What would you say to younger upcoming music producers ?
- Spellz – I will say carve your style don’t imitate anybody . It may take a while to get your own style instead of looking for what is reigning or what is trending . It is very easy to copy a beat style but even when you are doing that always have your identity because without that there is no longevity in the industry because everyone will know you don’t have a style . When a new style comes out you will jump to the new style . People who really love music will know…” this guy will.. give me something everybody has’….nothing unique . So you have to have your own special juice , make sure its really dope before you come out . For me it took me 3-4years to get my own style – coming for someone with a music background that [plays multiple instruments and everyday I am still learning the craft each time .
-
What do you do for fun ?
- Spellz- I enjoy family time . I am an indoor person . Hanging out with friends , have a cookout , as long as there is some food , drinks and a little music I am good . I also like traveling it opens up my mind musically . Sometimes when I have inspiration block I travel somewhere I relate with the culture and the people there – you listen to their music and bring back that vibe , that energy back into your music .
