Hope Monye, the CEO of Kubechi Conceptz is a professional fashion designer, specialised in creating bespoke wears. Hope’s passion and drive has seen her works stream to corridors she once dreamt of. The Delta State indigene illustrates how she has carved a niche for herself by trading In fashion items during her days as a student. Below is an exclusive interview with the CEO of the brand Kubechi.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE FASHION DESIGNING AS A CAREER?
The truth is, I have always loved fashion as a child because my mum was also a fashion designer. Whilst in school, I used to sell fashion items and accessories basically to friends and family members. So, after I graduated, I had a stint at one or two jobs but, I had to resign when I wasn’t quite getting the satisfaction I wanted.
TELL US WHAT THE KUBECHI BRAND IS ALL ABOUT
The ‘Kubechi’ brand officially started in 2012 to cater to sophisticated women (elegance/ minimalist). Kubechi Conceptz was originally birthed as an outfit whose main business was the packaging and supply of corporate gifts/souvenirs– including Christmas hampers to corporate organizations. The name ‘Kubechi’ is a corruption of my Igbo name CHE-KUBECHUKWU—where it was shortened to Kubechukwu and Chukwu (meaning God) is replaced with the alternate word ‘Chi’ hence ‘Kubechi’– This was mostly due to the difficulty in people not being able to pronounce the name I had to ‘funkify’ it.
Over the years the brand has evolved to become a full-fledged fashion outfit and as I mentioned earlier, it caters to the sophisticated woman.
DO YOU HAVE ANY SIGNATURE DESIGN? IF YES, WHAT IS IT?
Our signature design would be our ‘adire’ collection which has been accepted and taken the brand globally. The creativity and attention to details that go into the making and the eventual outcome make it simply class with an alluring panache and yet so simple.
What are your greatest strength as well as weaknesses?
I’ll say my greatest strength as a fashion designer is my attention to details, elegance in finishing and fit. And like I always tell people, the first thing that you need in this terrain and indeed in any business terrain is passion. You must have a passion for whatever you do because that will sustain you no matter the situation.
My weakness will be the fact that i take client satisfaction very seriously and l go the extra mile for my clients. However, I find that some people take advantage of this but thankfully most people appreciate good customer service.
What are the work ethics you believe in while working in fashion?
Continuous learning ,Self development,Having a Trusted and reliable team that are open to creatively interpreting your vision and service excellence although I still consider my brand as “work in progress
