Adire seems to be the new lifestyle currency in fashion and more designers are jumping on it. In as much as we give kudos to these designers cashing out on it, there are a select few that we recognize their extra effort of working with is indigenous fabric from start to finish . Not just that but when you think “Adire” one of two of these brands come readily to mind as they have held on tightly to this fabric for quite a number of years and their works are strictly sun from the Adire fabric . The History of Adire – A Tribute to Times & Legacy of Mama Abigail Eebudola Bakare

Mama Abigail Eebudola Bakare learnt the art of Art Rire and Adire (Indigo Dyeing and Tie-an-dye) from her mother who had become proficient in the trade. A major breakthrough came for her in 1975 through her Adire trade when she participated in a workshop co-ordinated by Augusta Sandstrom, a lecturer in the Fine Art Department at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, who also acted as a translator. Mama was selected to travel to America exclusively for the purpose of showcasing her textile artistry. Over the course of several weeks, Mama creatively displayed her Adire wares and taught master classes on several university campuses in several cities, demonstration how Africans made their clothes before the advent of Europeans. Mama was the first to travel to Europe and America in the entire Afuwape and Bakare clans.

On the 23rd of March, 2017, at the Nigerian institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Mama received the Adire Celebrity Award (2017) in recognition of her immense contribution over the decades towards the growth and development of Adire fashion in Nigeria and worldwide, on the occasion of a public presentation of a book titled Adire Eleko Fabric Art: A Vanishing Nigerian Indigo Impression by Prof. Tunde M. Akinwunmi.

  1. Amede Nzeribe
    Amede Nzeribe is a lawyer turned designer and the founder of the eponymous womenswear brand Amede which is known for its unique use of the tie dye and batik techniques. The Amede brand is known for its versatile use of colour and print, bringing out collections in various silhouettes and outfits. Amede Nzeribe was awarded Most Innovative Women’s Wear Designer at the Middle East and Africa Business Awards in 2017.
    She has had her designs showcased in various fashion shows like Arise Fashion Week, Africa Fashion Week, London etc. The Amede designs have been featured alongside international brands like Prada and Lanvin as well as international publications like Glamour, Elle, Vogue and Conde Nast.

    2. Ayomide Dokunmu and Omehi Ighodalo
    Ayomide and Omoehi are the brains behind Ayora, a womenswear brand founded in 2020 with the aim to create simple and comfortable contemporary styles with traditional fabrics. The beauty of the Adire fabric and its techniques as well as the fact that not a lot of people use traditional fabrics for contemporary styles inspired these ladies to set up the Ayora brand. They make use of batik, silk, brocade as well as chiffon to create their designs.
    Ayomide is the founder of Femme Africa and Femme Magazine, an organization dedicated to supporting and uplifting women in the creative industry.
    Omoehi Ighodalo on the other hand is a serial entrepreneur, born to highly placed parents, Asue Ighodalo – an astute lawyer and Ifeyinwa Ighodalo – an institution in the art of Interior Decor. The graduate of Sociology from the University of Manchester is the CEO of Mohini Beauty, Mohini Hair, Icora Home – an interior design outfit as well as Mohini Experience – a hair care salon.

    3. Cynthia Asije
    Cynthia Asije is the founder and textile designer of the Adire lounge, Nigerian based textile company that creates unique designs using the Adire technique on fabrics like chiffon, t-shirts, scarves, silk,  jerseys etc.
    The multi award winning textile designer has a certificate in entrepreneurship from EDC Lagos and a non profit leadership certificate from the Lagos Business School. Cynthia Asije was on the YNaija Power List 2018 for Fashion and Style as well as 100 Africa’s Next Start Up by IFC World Bank Group 2018.

    4. Rukky Ladoja
    Rukky Ladoja is the founder of Dye Lab as well as the former brand –  Grey Projects – which was a value chain solution agency with key focus on the creative industry, working with companies within the art, film, fashion and music industry to develop and produce projects that expand the reach of their brand.
    Her fashion label, Dye Lab is known for its playful use of bright colors with hand dyed prints which gives contemporary styles a spicy edge while also depicting ease and comfort.

    5. Yeside Laguda
    Yeside Laguda is the designer behind the eponymous fashion brand – Yeside Laguda formerly known as My Q Lifestyle, a luxury womenswear brand well know for its timeless pieces of Adire prints. The Yeside Laguda label boasts of sustainability and versatility. Yeside Laguda has channeled her love for arts, drawing and creativty into bringing her imaginations and musings to life through her designs. Asides her fashion brand, she also owns a children wear brand – three peas kids and a home and fragrance line – Dera officielle. Her recent collection ‘Voyage’ is sure to put you in the summer spirit as it showcases an holiday collection of outfits named after some of her favorite cities.

    6. Ade Bakare
    Ade Bakare of the Ade Bakare couture is a British based designer who started out his fashion line in 1991. With 30 years in the fashion industry, it has been one success story after the other for Ade Bakare.
    His label comprises of chic and modern collections in various colours, themes and trend conscious styles.
    Ade Bakare is also a costume Designer and has designed for movies like the recently released movie Ayinla by Tunde Kelani, Lekki Housewives, Battleground Series where he styled Shaffy Bello, A place in the Stars etc.
    He was also the official designer to late first lady, Stella Obasanjo.
    Ade Bakare has achieved various milestones in his 30 years of designing.

Ifeyinwa Azubuike
The Ladymaker is womenswear handmade in Lagos, Nigeria. The brand has developed a core aesthetic of understated, strong womanhood. Founder, Ifeyinwa Azubike, trained at Istituto di Moda Burgo (Lagos Campus), having founded The Ladymaker after leaving a decade-long career as a commercial lawyer.
