Nigeria recently lost a media giant with the passing of Dr. Doyinsola “Doyin” Abiola on August 5, 2025. At 82, she left behind a powerful legacy as a pioneer who not only broke barriers but also shaped the nation’s press.

After graduating from the University of Ibadan in 1969, Dr. Abiola quickly rose through the ranks. She gained prominence with her column “Tiro” at the Daily Sketch, which boldly addressed gender and societal issues. Her career reached a pinnacle in 1980 when she became the pioneer editor of National Concord. In 1986, she made history again, becoming the first female Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of the Concord Group, a role she held for three decades.

Unbowed by military rule and media crackdowns, Dr. Abiola was a fierce defender of the press. Her belief that “you don’t give up on truth and justice simply because it’s dangerous” became her guiding principle. Remembered as a “soldier of democracy” and a champion for women journalists, her influence extended beyond headlines, even as a supporter of Nigerian fashion, famously walking the runway for one of her favourite designers -Tiffany Amber . Although she had loads of friends in the media as well – Betty Irabor Publisher of Genevieve Magazine , she was always spotted at events with her daughter –Mrs. Doyin Abiola-Tobun.

Dr. Abiola’s life stands as a testament to courage, integrity, and a lifelong commitment to a free and just society.
