Owobo Ogunde (aka Basorun) returns to his theatrical roots in a bold African reimagining of Romeo and Juliet

Celebrated Actor Owobo Ogunde, widely recognised for his compelling performance in the acclaimed Aníkúlápó series, has joined the cast of Love in Lagos, a bold African reimagining of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

For Owobo Ogunde, the production marks something of a homecoming. Having begun his acting journey on stage at a very young age, Love in Lagos sees him return to his theatrical roots following his growing body of work on screen.

A member of the legendary Ogunde family, who pioneered Nigerian theatre. Owobo brings both a rich theatrical heritage and his own distinctive presence to the production.

Set in 1960s Lagos, Love in Lagos gives Shakespeare’s timeless story of forbidden love an unmistakably African heartbeat. The production blends African storytelling, live music, fashion, dance and culture to create a vibrant theatrical experience exploring love, family, loyalty and conflict.

The production will play across three UK cities this October:

Coventry — 3 October 2026
Manchester — 4 October 2026
London — 10 October 2026

For Owobo, it is a return to where his acting story began. For audiences, it is an opportunity to see a super star talent demonstrate the true meaning of: abinibi yato si ability. Owobo Ogunde – live on stage.

This October, Shakespeare meets Lagos — and an iconic love story finds a new rhythm.
