Best Time to Excercise to Lose Belly Fat

Does Working Out in the Morning Really Burn More Belly Fat?

Timing your workout may make a difference—but losing belly fat still comes down to the bigger picture.

Belly fat has acquired plenty of nicknames—love handles, muffin top, potbelly—but beyond the aesthetics, abdominal fat can have important implications for health.

The greater concern is visceral fat, the fat stored deep within the abdomen around organs such as the liver and intestines. Unlike the softer subcutaneous fat that sits beneath the skin, excess visceral fat is associated with a higher risk of conditions including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

So, if reducing abdominal fat is the goal, does the time you exercise matter?

The Case for a Morning Workout

Research published in Obesity found an association between exercising earlier in the day and having a lower body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference.

Participants who exercised between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. had an average BMI of 27.5, compared with 28.3 among those exercising later. Their average waist circumference was also slightly smaller—96 cm compared with approximately 97.5–97.8 cm in the later exercise groups.

Interesting? Absolutely. But it doesn’t mean a 7 a.m. workout is a magic formula for a flatter stomach. The study shows an association, rather than proving that morning exercise itself caused the difference.

What About Exercising Before Breakfast?

Fasted exercise has also attracted attention because the body may use a greater proportion of fat for fuel during a workout when insulin levels are relatively low.

That doesn’t necessarily translate into dramatically greater long-term fat loss, however. Total energy expenditure, diet, exercise consistency and overall lifestyle still matter.

In other words, don’t abandon your evening workout simply because you can’t make the gym before breakfast. A workout you can maintain consistently is far more useful than the supposedly “perfect” workout time that doesn’t fit your life.

Cardio + Strength Is the Better Combination

For reducing overall body fat, aerobic activities such as brisk walking, running, swimming, skipping and hiking can increase energy expenditure while supporting cardiovascular fitness.

But don’t leave strength training out of the equation.

Building and maintaining muscle supports metabolism and overall body composition. Aim to incorporate resistance or strength exercises into your routine around two to three times a week, alongside regular aerobic activity.

And no amount of perfectly timed exercise completely cancels out lifestyle habits. Reducing excessive alcohol consumption, limiting added sugars, eating a balanced diet, sleeping adequately and managing stress all contribute to healthy weight management.

The Beauté Rack Take

If mornings work for you, an early workout may be a great way to start the day—and research suggests there could be some advantages. But when it comes to losing belly fat, timing is only one small part of the equation.

The best time to exercise? The time you can consistently show up.
