How Eki Kere is Changing the Narrative

By Moriam Musa

Raffia has long been woven into Nigeria’s cultural fabric with the likes of designers like Modela —but nothing like what the brand –Eki kere is doing at the moment who is presently at the forefront of this high-fashion reinvention .

Abasiekeme Ukanireh, who is spearheading this invention of the Raffia vest , handwoven by artisans in Ikot Ekpene (south of Nigeria) using traditional raffia weaving methods dating back centuries. The Raffia Vest epitomizes the brand’s commitment to promoting culture, preserving craftsmanship, and respecting the ecosystem by creating clothing that naturally decomposes into manure at the end of its life cycle. Hence the Eki kere brand is turning tradition into trend.

Each collection from the brand is nothing short of revolutionary. From the raffia-fringed kaftans to sculptural evening coats, Abasiekemes  pieces echo heritage while boldly speaking the language of contemporary luxury. Nigerian celebrities like Toke Makinwa, Temi and Cuppy Otedola and most recently Davido album cover – Five ,   have already been spotted rocking her creations—proof that raffia is no longer reserved for souvenir stalls or craft markets .

Abasiekeme , joins the ranks of Nigerian designers such as Lisa Folawiyo, Rukky Ladoja , Banke kuku , and Ejiro Amos Tafiri , who are redefining African fashion for the global stage. But while others dabble in fabric innovation, Abasiekeme is fully immersed—working directly with local raffia artisans, reviving techniques from the Raffia City , and turning every piece into a cultural artefact.

The Eki kere brand  speaks to the modern Nigerian woman: bold, rooted, and unafraid to turn heads. And in a world craving authenticity, raffia—raw, sustainable, and deeply African—is finding new relevance.

As the fashion world shifts toward ethical, handmade luxury, Abasiekeme is not just riding the wave withEki Kere—she’s shaping it. With each stitch, she’s proving that raffia can be regal, runway-ready, and revolutionary.
