– Your first book ‘The Full Set’ which is currently on pre-order is filled with business experiences other entrepreneurs can learn from. What was the process of writing the book like?

The Full Set has got to be my most exciting project yet, writing my business experiences over 10 years was nothing short of emotional as well as therapeutic. I spent the most part of the lockdown writing the book and it really helped create some balance for me while nursing my newborn and managing my mental health given the uncertainties that came with the novel pandemic.

I hadn’t realized how much of my personal life experiences had affected my business decisions, writing the book definitely gave me clarity and perspective, as well as the courage to pat myself on the back because prior to that, I couldn’t see how much I’d grown.

– Growing up in a Hausa – Fulani setup, do you feel your background had an impact on your love for beauty?

Oh definitely! I grew up surrounded by naturally beautiful women, their effortless approach to aesthetics made it so appealing. Growing up with a Fulani grandmother particularly taught me the importance of taking care of your hair and skin, even beautifying your nails was non negotiable. I grew up wearing lalle (henna) on my hands and feet, I couldn’t leave the house without wearing kwalli (eye liner). I think what I loved the most was how natural the beauty remedies were, beauty was ingrained in me.

– You started The Nail Bar after realizing there was no spa dedicated to providing professional nail care treatments in Abuja. From that time till now how well have things evolved in that sector?

Over the last 6 years there has been a surge in the emergence of nail salons and mobile nail technicians in Abuja and this has been so exciting for me to see because it just means the industry is growing! The more nail spas and nail technicians we have, the higher the awareness is for an otherwise under represented industry. I’ve also noticed that even day spas that ordinarily didn’t pay attention to having a nail section now invest in proper space and equipment for those sections, which is fantastic.

– This year, The Nail Bar is going to be celebrating 10 years in business. How do you feel about this?

I am still pinching myself, because given all that I’ve experienced on my business journey – from being attacked to theft, to even just the general Nigerian factors to running a business – I survived! It’s a whole new testament to my resilience and God’s hand in my affairs.

– Now that you’ve published your first book, do you plan on writing more books as time goes on?

Writing this book was extremely exhilarating and I am so passionate about playing my part in improving the standards of my industry. My hope is that this book impacts the lives and businesses of others positively, if I am opportune to keep sharing my experiences and helping others as a result, I’d definitely be writing more books.

– Right now, Amali Cosmetics consists of Lacquers, Gel Polishes, Nail Files and Lipsticks. Do you plan on including other cosmetic products in the long run?

Amali Cosmetics was born as a tool for education, my passion to create a high quality, non toxic line of nail care products for women of color still burns intensely so I will definitely be expanding our product line in due course.

– What would you regard as your greatest achievement till date?

Raising two children under two, running a business and celebrating ten years in the midst of a pandemic that nearly left my industry derelict has got to be my greatest achievement till date. The business environment has not been the friendliest, so to still be here, doing what I love and exceeding all the goals I set for myself is truly a blessing!
